The word "Mamou" first entered my consciousness via that Del Monte ad featuring Panjee (then) Gonzales, who called her grandmother "Mamou". So, when Mamou, the resto, opened, well, thoughts of a young Panjee and Del Monte tomato sauce somehow mixed in my head. I actually never bothered to check what was going on in that little space, and what I encountered when I went in to eat surprised me.
The first surprise was the time limit, if you happen to book the 6:30 seating. Because there is a second seating at 8:30, you will be asked to leave by 8:20. My first reaction was, not surprisingly, "WHAAAT? Dining under time pressure?? What is the world coming to???" Actually, the world, or in this case, Mamou, was coming to New York, where things like set times for dining are actually common. And, to be fair, they do warn you about it when you reserve. You'd be lucky to stay for two hours at some joints in New York; they limit you to an hour, so, looking at it that way, it was fair.
However, the 8:30 seating has no such time constraints. Needless to say, I booked for 8:30. Which was a little pointless since my wife and I arrived at the place at 7:30, starving.
Luckily, our table was already set. I ran into a few friends and what looked like the carcass of a small animal on their table. I asked what was good, and they replied, in unison, "The steak!!" Which immediately set me up NOT to order the steak.
Aside from the fact that I am a nonconformist by nature, I had already heard of the steak and its, well, its goodness, from other people. I also am not a big steak lover, but the chorus of halleluias intrigued me enough to see what else can these people do well.
To be fair, the fish was unquestionably fresh and was battered excellently. The wedges, which were all of, oh, a third of a potato, I'm guessing, were also well done. The dish came with a small saucer of tartar sauce and an empty one, where one could pour some malt vinegar to dip the fishes and chips in. A good experience, except that I could have used some more chips. Also, while the tartar sauce made for an excellent condiment to the dish, the malt vinegar seemed to be asking for something more, like maybe some salt sprinkled in the dish itself, just to enhance the contrast the vinegar provides. It was good, I just wish there were more of it.
As we were leaving, I caught sight of the citrus-rubbed pork and chicken roast, which looked absolutely wonderful in its plate with a side of red rice. And, of course, there was also a serving of their huge steaks getting prepped for delivery. To be fair, the steak looks awesome; its just that steaks don't impress me.
The experience at Mamou was good, but, sadly, not satisfying. This was the verdict my wife and I reached, even as we sat eating potato wedges in another restaurant across Mamou, mulling over what we just went through. Would we go back? Maybe, that roast dish looked promising. But definitely not at 6:30.

Hello Stich, Thank you for your post on Mamou, We value your comments as this is what drives us to do better. May I respond to the 2 seating set up? As our restaurant is still quite new,(we are only entering our 4th Month) we have been blessed with quite a few reservations. As such during the 1st month, patrons would make reservations usually between 7:30 and 8:00 pm. the restaurant would be fully booked at those time slots. When patrons would walk in at around 6~6:30 they would find the restaurant empty but with no available seating. They would comment that the place was empty and sugested we try 2 seatings so as to accomodate more patrons. I at first was reluctant as we did not want to seem snooty but was prevailed upon by patrons as they felt that more people could be accomodated specially those who just want to come for a quick meal and be on thier way. we hope to revert to the usual set up when the newness of the restaurant wears down. thanks again JAFORES of Mamou

Thanks for the comment. I actually do get it, and I think that your two seating thing will become a more common thing as more diners join the whole scene. It of course isn't ideal, but I think it's the direction to which the resto scene will be going, for better or worse.
Hi. I was surfing through the web and chanced upon this site. I just had to share our very brief experience with Mamou which I hope will help improve the restaurant's service.
First impressions do last and ours didn't even go as far as the food. One Sunday noon, my family was looking for a good place to eat at Serendra since one of our favorite restaurants there was already packed. Mamou's menu by the entrance did interest us and we walked in--me, my husband, our two grown-up sons and 11-year old duaghter. It was around 11:30 and that's pretty early. The place was empty and as we looked around for a table, we saw all the "reserved" signs on each one of them. Thinking maybe we could be given a table since we were early (as most restos would do)we waited for someone to approach us from among their staff of at least 12 who were shuffling back and forth the dining area and the kitchen. We were in plain sight of the busy cooks who were prepping behind the clear glass kitchen windows.We stood there for a good 10 minutes in sheer disbelief that not one of them approached us. Finally, the woman proprietress (I guess and I'm sorry I didn't get your name) walked out from the kitchen, surprised to see us standing in the middle of the dining area, and approached us. She was cordial, though visibly preoccupied with preps herself. She gave me a calling card and suggested I call and reserve next time. We walked out by 12, tables still empty. By then we were famished, quite disappointed and upset with the restos' lack of courtesy and inhospitable environment.
I'm sorry but snooty does best describe how we felt about the place and it was a complete turn off. Knowing now about the time limit doesn't help at all. A great restaurant isn't defined by good food alone--it's the total delightful(or traumatic) experience you give your customers that they take home and remember you for.
I've been in the resto biz myself and do understand birthing pains and how honest feedback from customers help a great deal. In time things will be better and I'll be back then with my family.
